We are a tech start-up firm. Our objective is to make money by developing successful web based applications for the general public. There are two ways of making money online. One is when you create a web based system and then sell rights to advertise on the website to ad-networks or directly to companies. The second is when your application becomes immensely popular and you sell the complete website to a bigger player who pays for future revenues and consolidation advantages.
As part of the GNU/Linux Users Group in Trivandrum we are proud to bring to computer users in Trivandrum a wonderful opportunity to try out GNU/Linux for free. GNU/Linux Users Group- Trivandrum, Free Software Foundation - India, Zyxware Technologies and Space-Kerala.org joins hand to bring to fruition the first publicly held GNU/Linux Install Fest in Kerala.
We had an opportunity recently to provide support over the phone for one of our customers for installing Ubuntu and configuring Airtel broadband on a desktop PC. The Airtel broadband was connected through a Beetel 220BX ADSL modem but the instructions should work for most broadband connections where the device is a modem router.
The legal fraternity in and around Trivandrum district has been demanding for a high court bench in the capital city of Kerala since 1957. The demand is being supported by all political parties and the ruling Government of Kerala. To further mobilize the campaign the supporters had engaged us to set up a website for the protest. The website is expected to add momentum to the protest.
With a view to promote the status of Kerala as an IT Hub, Kerala State IT mission organized yet another IT Show. The theme of Kerala IT.Com 2008 was ‘Kerala – The IT Destination Hub – Cutting edge and Viable solutions through use of IT’. This time the show was hosted at Technopark. One major change in this years show was a stall offerred by the IT Mission for the promotion of free software community in the state and for the promotion of free software in Industry.
We are happy to announce the release of yet another Drupal module. This time it is the "Comment Subscribe" module that will allow anonymous as well as registered users on a drupal site to subscribe to replies to their comments. The module will send notifications to the subscribed users about the replies to their comments or replies to their comment's children.
In a bid to promote the GNU/Linux User Group Trivandrum we have decided to offer free hosting plans for members of the group. The only eligibility criteria that we are looking forward to is a minimum level of involvement in the group activities.
Wordweb is one of the most useful tools for a content developer or a technical writer working on a plain old Windows machine. When somebody like that moves to Ubuntu from Windows he/she would want to have a somewhat similar functionality in Ubuntu too. In GNU/Linux there is the gnome-dictionary or the kdict application that has similar functionality as wordweb. However some minor tweaks are required to make these applications behave almost exactly like Wordweb.
What is the easiest way to convert ideas into money? Sure there is no short-cut way and you still have to put in a lot of effort but making money on Afternic is reasonably easy and straightforward. If you have a creative flair and have some money that you can safely spare then Afternic is for you. For those of you who have not heard of Afternic, it is the online system where you can sell your domain names for the highest bidder.
We had never had to configure an Airtel GPRS internet connection on a Laptop with Ubuntu before as we never had a customer who had one such connection. We however got an opportunity last day when we installed ubuntu on a compaq presario F733AU laptop. Setting up internet access on Ubuntu is easy in itself and setting up GPRS could not have been any easier. The customer had a Nokia 9300 communicator with a USB datacable.
Blogger/Blogspot is one of the most popular destinations for bloggers both new and experienced. When you sign up for a blogger account or use your existing Google account to create a blog you will get a blog with a URL like yourblogname.blogspot.com. This is a good way to start your first blog. However as you climb the ladders of popularity in blogosphere you will want to have your own domain name like www.yourblogname.com instead of the one above. Blogspot allows for this easily through their blog management interface.

Similar to the StumbleThis module that we had created earlier we have created another bookmarking module for Drupal - SlashdotIt module. Unlike the other social bookmarking sites Slashdot is very selective in terms of the articles that get approved from the submission queue also known as the Slashdot firehose. Use this module on your site only if you are sure that you have slashdot worthy content.
We have been looking for a freelance/part-time content developer for our company for some time and have been getting good response from interested people. We have been asked several questions regarding the position and we felt it would be better for everybody if we write out the exact requirements we are trying to fulfil and the responsibilities of the position. So here it is now in black and white.
Who can apply?
GNU/Linux has grown from being a pet project of a few Free Software enthusiasts to one of the most viable and usable alternatives to proprietary operating systems. It is really amazing to look at this growth and one can but look with awe at the contributions made by countless and sometimes nameless scores of people in the Free Software communities. These communities have been formed over a long period of slow evolution and there are certain rules and manners(some written and some unwritten) that you have to follow to participate in them. Our attempt here is to prepare a list of such rules and manners that will enable a newbie to start participating in communities without embarrassing themselves.

In a high profile function at the State Capital on 16th January 2008, the INSIGHT Project - ICT centre for differently abled in the state of Kerala was inaugurated. The project is promoted by the Kerala State IT mission (KSITM). SPACE (Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment) who masterminded the switch to the School GNU/Linux for the IT @ School project is the key player behind this project as well.
When you have more than one system with Ubuntu installed, and you have to install same or similar set of packages on all your PCs, you can save on a lot of bandwidth if you had some ways of sharing the downloaded packages and updates. There is an easy way to do this in Ubuntu. This is done using apt-cacher a proxy server for your package repositories. It is very easy to set up and configure apt-cacher on a PC with Ubuntu inside your LAN.
Most webmasters do not realize this, but a lot of the content on lot of websites can be accessed from multiple URLs. A simple example would be where www.example.com and example.com leads to the same page. This is a fatal mistake in Search Engine Optimization and search engines penalize you for duplicate content. The correct configuration would be where the above two urls will lead you to the same page but example.com will redirect you to www.example.com with a 301 (Moved permanently) status which will not result in search engines penalizing the page. It is very easy to configure 301 redirects using Apache .htaccess file and the process is the same for a Drupal installation also.
We have volunteered to take up the maintenance of a very useful Drupal module - Search404. As of today we are the official maintainers of this very useful Drupal module. We know that this is going to be a challenge for us, being a young company and with a young team. But we do feel that it is our responsibility to give back to the Drupal community at least some part of what it has given us.
