Most of us must be familiar with the names 'dig' and 'whois'. If not, these are two commands used to find the details of domains. You just have to type in dig domainname or whois domainname to get a comprehensive set of info on the domain. What if you have not just one or two domains to check about. How about a 1000 domains and you want to know the details of each? Big job?? Don’t worry. You have the shell at your command. Just write a script to automate this for you. Here’s such a script that I wrote for my uses. You just have to pass on the list of domains as input to this script, and it will give you the necessary info in another text file. The following is the script that does this function. #!/bin/bash # dig $line +short >> ip address # whois $line >> Lists full details including the name servers # whois $line | grep "Name Server" | cut -d ":" -f 2 | sed 's/ //' | sed -e :a -e '$!N;s/ \n/,/;ta'` while read domain do echo $domain ipaddress=`dig $domain +short` nameserver=`whois $domain | grep "Name Server" | cut -d ":" -f 2 | sed 's/ //' | sed -e :a -e '$!N;s/ \n/,/;ta'` echo -e "$domain,$ipaddress,$nameserver" >> details.csv done Here the domains.txt is the input text document that will contain all your domains and the details.csv will be the output of the script, with the necessary details of all the domains passed. Directi is one of the largest domain registrars on the internet with their services such as ResellerClub, and they provide wonderfully complete to-go solutions for resellers. But there are times when you would want to build upon their platforms rather than just use their entire solution. For this, they provide you the Directi API. You can build upon these as you wish to build out customized solutions of your own. One of the first steps in registering a domain is checking the availability of the domain name you are interested in. DirectI API provides the checkAvailability function for this. function: AssociativeArray checkAvailability (string $userName, string $password, string $role, string $langpref, int $parentid, string $domainName, boolean $suggestAlternative) Inputs: string $userName: Username. string $password: Password. string $role: Role. string $langpref: Language Preference. int $parentid: Parent id. string $domainName: The domainname for which availability is to be checked boolean $suggestAlternative: If this parameter is true, then availability will be checked for all supported TLD's. If it is false, then availability will be checked only for the specified TLD. Returns: AssociativeArray AssociativeArray has the domainname as the key and a AssociativeArray as the value. The inner AssociativeArray has two keys - status and classkey {atestdomain.com={status=regthroughothers, classkey=domcno}} Possible values for the status are: available, regthroughus and regthroughothers. The classkey denotes the TLD type of the domainname. define('DIRECTI_USER', $directi_username); define(DIRECTI_PASSWORD', $directi_password); define('DIRECTI_LANG', 'en'); define('DIRECTI_PARENTID', $directi_parent_id); define('DIRECTI_ROLE', “reseller”); define('SERVICE_URL,'http://soapapi.com/anacreon/servlet/APIv3') /** * Functions for check availabilty of an domain */ function check_domainavailability($domain, $tld) { $DEBUG = TRUE; define('C_DEBUG', $DEBUG); $username = DIRECTI_USER; $password = DIRECTI_PASSWORD; $langpref = DIRECTI_LANG; $parentid = DIRECTI_PARENTID; $role = DIRECTI_ROLE; $domain = $_POST['domain']; $domain_name = explode('.',$domain); $arr_domains= array($domain_name); $available_extensions = array('com', 'us', 'net', 'org', 'biz', 'info', 'ws'); $serviceObj = new DomOrder(path to DomOrder.wsdl lib file); $obj_available_domain = $serviceObj->checkAvailabilityMultiple($username, $password, $role, $langpref, $parentid, $arr_domains, $available_extensions, TRUE); // $obj_available_domain variable return an array of available and unavailable domains. } Directi API API Integration Domain Registration ResellerClub Leave a reply Your email address will not be published. One of our commitments to our customers is that we will never force our products/service on you just for the sake of selling these. We try our best to match your requirement with the products and services we offer and fit the one that best fits your needs. We have been selling our hosting services both in the local market and in the international market for the last 2 years and we have been slowly building a set of loyal customers for these services. One of the frequent questions that we have had to answer was "How much web space and bandwidth do you really need for a website". This is a tough question to answer without really knowing what you are going to put up on the site and how many are going to visit it. In any case here are the general tips and guidelines that we offer our customers. Hosting Account Space These days very few people go along with the traditional pure HTML sites. Most get their sites set up using one of the popular content management systems like Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress etc. We normally recommend Wordpress for beginners and Drupal for advanced users. A typical installation would take between 5-15MB of space depending on the modules that you set up. Adding pages to these CMSs would probably only increase the size by maybe 20kB per additional page. By this rate you could host a thousand pages in 20MB of space. How much more space would you need would depend on a few of things - mainly images, audio and video files. Another factor which people fail to consider is the space requirements for mail accounts. Space required for hosting images For one it would depend on the number of images that you are going to store on the site. People sometimes enquire about the possibility of posting high resolution photos on their websites. Any resolution above 1024x768 would practically not make any difference to the end user who is going to view it over a typical internet connection on a typical monitor. So storing higher resolution photos are only going to be an unnecessary expense that you will have to bear. An average 1024x768 image (jpeg format is ideal and around 85% quality is optimal) would be around 100kB-150kB. So for every 6-7 pictures that you want to post you will need 1MB of hosting space. An alternative to this would be to use your hosting space to host your CMS and then host your images on public hosting services offered by sites like flickr or picasa Space required for hosting audio and video Small and medium websites also cannot really afford to host massive content like video and audio on their sites directly. Instead they can utilize the free media hosting websites like Youtube or Blip.tv. Even if these sites are able to squeeze these media files into the hosting spaces the massive bandwidth requirement that is going to come from users viewing these media files are normally beyond the range of common hosting packages. Most of the Free Software CMSes support some kind of plugin that will allow you to access these media files from other sites and show them directly on your website without them having to visit these external sites. The only downside would be that the viewers will normally be offered an option to visit the hosting sites by these plugins. We normally recommend small and medium website owners to go for one of these options when they have to host media content. Using GMail as your Mail Server and saving on hosting space Google had started offering custom domain name support for gmail quite a while back. This allows Small and Medium website users to directly opt for using Google as their mail server and save on their hosting bills. This option offers the possibility of using the safe and secure mail service offered by Google and at the same time retain your identity by using your own domain names. If you need to configure your domain to use Google Mail Server do get in touch with us and we will be able to help you with this. Hosting Account Monthly Bandwidth Limit More important than the hosting account size requirements are the bandwidth requirements for your site. But calculating this is pretty straightforward. Typical web pages generated using such CMS frameworks have sizes around 100-150kB each. So if you are expecting 10000 page views every month or around 300 pageviews every day you will need around 2GB of monthly bandwidth. Now if you are using external services for hosting your media content then you don't have to worry about the bandwidth usage for such content. Buying our services You can take a look at the current hosting plans offered by Zyxware and decide for yourself the plan that you would need based on the above recommendations. Once you pick your plan make a payment as per payment options provided and send us a mail at hosting [at] zyxware.com and we will set up your hosting for you. If you have the files and images on your server (current host), then you will be charged for the fees that the host will require. But if you have the files elsewhere (seperate server/host) you won't pay for the hosting fees. Sorry for being confusing but the point is you can save money by hosting your files elsewhere. Services like bandwidthdiet.com or Amazon S3 do this well. Or try it yourself. It's a method that is not well known but very effective. Add new comment

What is the easiest way to convert ideas into money? Sure there is no short-cut way and you still have to put in a lot of effort but making money on Afternic is reasonably easy and straightforward. If you have a creative flair and have some money that you can safely spare then Afternic is for you. For those of you who have not heard of Afternic, it is the online system where you can sell your domain names for the highest bidder. Afternic.com provides an interesting and very useful service for domain name speculators. If you can think up a good domain name that is not yet registered you can buy the domain name and offer it for sale on Afternic. Although this might lead to what is sometimes known as domain squatting, it is a pretty interesting way to make money for those who have a creative tinge. You can make use of the cheap domain registration rates at Zyxware Domains to buy domains in bulk and offer the domains for sale on Afternic. Afternic charges you 20$ as annual fees for listing your domains. So you will have to have a reasonable number of domains to be able to make efficient use of the overhead. There are three issues that you have to keep in mind when you register domains. The first is about the definition of what is a good domain name that you can sell and get a good profit. The answer to this question is not simple. Some of the key aspects of good domain names are - short, easy to remember, rhyming, combination of short words etc. The best way to get an idea is to go browse through the list of domains that have been sold on Afternic and then figure it out yourself. Browsing through names also will give you new ideas about new domain names that you could possibly register. The second issue that you have to keep in mind is related to the legal and ethical aspects of buying a domain name. Buying a domain name that is a registered trademark of another company with a malicious intent to sell it to the trademark owner is called cyber-squatting or domain-squatting. This is illegal and you can be legally forced to either not be able to do anything with the domain name or give up the domain name to the rightful owner. Even if it was legal we feel that this borders on the definition of unethical business behaviors. The third issue is with the risks associated with such a venture. As with any speculative business there is a definite risk in domain name business also. Given below this article are some of the recent domains that were sold on Afternic. Given that an average domain name costs only around 10 Dollars you can see the percentage of profit that you can make through domain sales. But don't be deceived just by these amounts. You will probably have to invest in a few domain names before you can start selling and even then not all your domain names would be sell-worthy or not all would fetch you similar prices. Doing a little homework can mitigate a lot of risks. Additionally afternic provides you some premium services like affiliate marketing and expanded promotion schemes that can help you highlight your domain name to potential buyers. Yes, these services come at their prices. As a company we condemn cyber-squatting and will not recommend it as a fair way of making money. However you can make money legally and ethically on Afternic by investing in domain names that do not infringe on Trademarks. You can coin your own words, or use word combinations, or use letter combinations to create domain names that could possibly sell for hundreds, thousands or even millions of dollars. Tips to create a good domain name Selling domains is a mature business and there are already around 2 million domain names available for sale on Afternic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name has some tips on how to coin good domain names. Listed below you can find some of our recommendations on how to create a good domain name. Most of the words in the dictionary has already been registered. However you could try your hand in registering english-ised words from your local language to register domains that you can sell to your own countrymen. For example the corresponding word for greetings in Malayalam is 'Namaskaram'. The .com domain has already been registered but this should give you an idea. You don't have to restrict yourselves to just the .com, .net or .org TLDs (Top Level Domain names). It is true that these are the domain names that sell like hotcakes but you can also go after third level domain names like .co.in, .co.org etc or after country code extensions like .us, .cc etc. There are also some expensive domain name extensions like .tv and .cc which would have more options available specifically because of their expensive nature. You can also try to create domain names that makes sense only when added to the extension. When you are trying to do this you also have an option of using something other than the typical www as the third level name. One of the more popular examples is del.icio.us. Here the domain name is icio.us and they have added a subdomain del to make a meaningful word delicious. Some of the recent sales on Afternic Given below are some of the recent sales on Afternic at the time of writing this article. You can find more atthe list of recent sales at Afternic.com. Blogger/Blogspot is one of the most popular destinations for bloggers both new and experienced. When you sign up for a blogger account or use your existing Google account to create a blog you will get a blog with a URL like yourblogname.blogspot.com. This is a good way to start your first blog. However as you climb the ladders of popularity in blogosphere you will want to have your own domain name like www.yourblogname.com instead of the one above. Blogspot allows for this easily through their blog management interface. The first step in the process is obviously to register a domain for yourself. We provide one of the cheapest domain registration services in the market. You can checkout http://domains.zyxware.co.in for the latest prices and register for yourself your own domain name. A .com domain goes at Rs. 350 (Approximately USD 8.75). Godaddy.com who is claiming to the cheapest domain registrar sells their .com domains at USD 9.99. Clearly we have beaten even Godaddy. Even though we have listed the prices in Indian rupees you can still make a payment using US Dollars or any other currency of your preference. Just proceed with the payment and you will be given the option while making your payment using the Paypal interface integrated with the system. Once you register your domain you will have to set a cname record for 'www' pointing to the following hostname - ghs.google.com. Just send us an email at domains at zyxware.com and we will gladly do this for you. If you already have your domain then you can create an account at xhttp://domains.zyxware.co.in and transfer the domain to your account with us and we will do the rest for you. If you already have a domain registered with another registrar and would not like to move your services to us or if you would like to register your domain with another registrar you are free to do so. Blogspot has provided sufficient documentation on how to setup cname records with other registrars - http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=55373. We will still try to help you with questions but we may not be able to guarantee you results. If you are a professional grade blogger or if you grow into one you will soon feel needs that blogspot will not be able to satisfy. At that point you will want to host your own blog. We have different hosting plans that you might want to consider in such a situation. Look at Zyxware Hosting Plans to see details and rates. Having your own domain name gives you one freedom - the freedom to move away from Blogspot when you feel like doing so. One will have to admire Blogger for giving you this freedom even though it might allow for attrition in their user count. Blogger also gives you detailed instructions on exporting your blogspot blog. This is not in any standard format but we should be able to help you import it into any other bloging application like wordpress or drupal. Just send us a note using the Contact Us page and we can work out a solution for you. In any case feel free to ask us your questions using the comments forms below and we will try to help you in whatever way we can. Happy Blogging. Blogging could be a favorite subject for anyone, anything you wanted to share. One could start with the free web blogging platform to drive himself in to the blogging sphere, but on the long run it may not be the effective way. A common phenomenon in bloggers world is, each one of them started their writing skills with free web blog platforms like Blogger, blogspot, myspace. Later bloggers identified they need a identity. They can not continue to contribute for some X company’s popularity. Now the options are plenty if you choose have your own domain name for your blogs. Let’s discuss one by one. Your blog is not just your online diary. Your content is for your targeted audience. Naturally me as a reader need to identify you. Dear blogger The question is, Do you have an identity? Is there an effective way than www.myblog.OTHERCOMPANY.TLD ? How will I compare the plan? What do I need actually? If you are very serious about using your blogs to promote your business, it is highly recommended that you should use a domain name to reflect your business interest. You are the owner of your domain, play with the object, and place the objects to reflect your interest. In normal website based platform with sub-domain options your scope is very limited to project your vested interest.
