Matrix Screensaver is a very popular screensaver based on the digital rain shots (moving text) in the blockbuster movie trilogy - The Matrix. This is available as a screensaver in popular GNU Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Fedora and Debian with their default installations. But the default Matrix Screensaver that comes with these distributions contains only falling English alphabets. Now Santhosh Thottingal of SMC (Swathanthra Malayalam Computing) has modified this for Indic scripts and has made it available for everybody. You can download the deb packages for debian and ubuntu at http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/smc/Screensaver/mlmatrix_2.22.... and the discussion on how to hack the Matrix Screensaver for your language can be found at Santhosh's Matrix Screensaver hack page. The fedora rpm is in the works and you can request for it from the SMC Mailing List. Additionally if you are a software professional from Kerala and you would like to contribute towards Malayalam Computing initiatives then the SMC Mailing List is the place to start. Uh.. huh.. XScreenSaver by default displays, reversed Japanese Katakana characters intermingled with English numerals (reversed, too). At least, that's what is shown in the movies, and that's what JWZ tried to write up. JWZ, Kudos to you for XScreenSaver -- the BEST screensaver for *nix. Santhosh, Kudos for brining in Malayalam to Xscreesaver. I've always wondered, why/when anyone would do Malayalam in XScreenSaver. You did it! (Oh.. yeah, I haven't tried it out yet -- too lazy!) Fedora team has been closely working with Swathanthra Malayalam Computing(SMC) team to get most of the SMC patches upstream and setting up Malayalam has been relatively easy on Fedora. Since most of the patches have gone to upstream fedora you don't have download any rpm other than Swanalekha (Malayalam transliterator) on your own to be able to read and write Malayalam on a Fedora 9 machine. Follow the basic instructions to set up Malayalam on Fedora 9. Open a terminal and become root by running su - Copy the following code into a file and save the file as ~/install.sh. Now in the terminal source the file by running source ~/install.sh. #remove lohit-malayalam yum remove lohit-malayalam #This will install scim-tables and related dependencies yum install scim-lang-malayalam #The update are not yet into the main repo so you have to #enable the testing repo to get the im-chooser. The im-chooser #installed by default crashes that is why we have to get the #updated version su -c 'yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update im-chooser' #Install all smc fonts yum install smc-fonts* cd ~ wget http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/smc/fedora/8/RPMS/swanalekha-ml-1-1.fc8.i386.rpm rpm -i swanalekha-ml-1-1.fc8.i386.rpm Now you launch im-chooser by going to System->Preferences->Personal->Input Method, and select 'enable input method'. You are all set to user your Fedora 9 system for both reading and writing in Malayalam Linux Free Software Fedora Leave a reply Your email address will not be published. If you can please take a look at the percentage of Keralites in IT industry in India you can see for yourself the penetration of English as a mainstream language in Kerala. Malayalam computing is about bridging the digital divide between the people who are still not quite there in the English fold and enabling them to use computers just like anybody else. Getting them to use computers will be the first step, moving on to English will be a natural progression from there :) sajeevan (not verified) access_time 19 Jun 2019 - 13:20 there is bug when i install it pls corrct webmaster access_time 19 Jun 2019 - 13:20 In reply to bugg found in instlletion by sajeevan (not verified) Hi, Could you please let us know the bug you found. Altair HyperWorks is an Enterprise level Computer Aided Engineering software that is widely used for rapid design exploration and decision-making. This software is supported both in Windows as well as Linux. The Linux version is tested to work with SUSE and RHEL. However with a little tweaking this can be made to run in Fedora. We were contacted by a Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) firm in Technopark, Trivandrum - DSI Technologies to help set this software in Fedora. We sent our team and successfully set up both version 7 and version 8 of Altair Hyperworks working on Fedora 8. Since Altair Hyperworks is a popular CAE software we felt that we should share our experience with the rest of Hyperworks users out there who are looking to try the software in Fedora instead of RHEL. Here are the steps we had to follow to get the software working. Installing Hyperworks 8 on Fedora 1) Download the tar archive and rename the file as hw8.tar 2) Extract the contents of the archive tar -xvf hw8.tar 2) The hyperworks installation script was created for Korn Shell. So install ksh 3) Run the installation script ./hw8/hwsetup.sh 4) Edit /etc/hosts and add the license server name and ip address 5) Create ~/runhm.sh and copy the following into the file export ALTAIR_LM_LICENSE_FILE=port@hostname /usr/lib/hw8/altair/scripts/hm 6) Edit /usr/lib/hw8/altair/scripts/arch_init.ksa and goto line 84 and comment the three lines 84-86 that sets the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 param Installing Hyperworks 7 on Fedora 1) tar -xvf hw7.tar 2) Install ksh 3) ./hw7/hwsetup.sh 4) Edit /etc/hosts and add ip of server 5) Create runhm.sh with the following contents export ALTAIR_LM_LICENSE_FILE=port@hostname /usr/lib/hw7/altair/scripts/hm 6) Edit /usr/lib/hw7/altair/scripts/arch_init.ksa and goto line 84 and comment the three lines 84-86 that sets the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1 param 7) Hyperworks 7 depends on the following rpms. Download the rpms from the fedora site and install rpm -i --nodeps tcl-8.3.5-96.0.1.i386.rpm tk-8.3.5-96.0.1.i386.rpm 8) Edit /usr/lib/hw7/altair/scripts/archLib.ksa and insert the following at line 132 4) export ALTAIR_GCCVER="_RH8" ;; This is to set the Architecture to RH8 for gcc4 The company is currently testing out the software on Fedora 8 and if they are satisfied with the performance they are planning to move their development platform to Fedora. If that happens we will be happy to have helped a commercial entity to move to the GNU/Linux platform thereby strengthening the claims of the maturity of the platform for use in commercial entities. We now have Fedora 8 DVD with us. Click here to order your copy of the Fedora 8 DVD using our RequestCD system. Kindly remember that this RequestCD feature is currently only available for users from India. Fedora 8 has been getting rave reviews from across the GNU/Linux user and developer community. A slew of features focusing on the usability of the system has been incorporated into Fedora 8. Some of the new features in Fedora include Pulse Audio, Codec Buddy, Online-Desktop, Compiz and Gnome 2.20. The KDE version was slated to have KDE 4 integrated and would have made Fedora 8 one of the first mainline distributions to go live with the much awaited KDE 4. Since KDE 4 was still not ready for public use they cut back on this option and went with KDE 3.58. Major changes has also been brought about with Yum in terms of dependency resolution and speed. The desktop look and feel has been made much more professional than the previous releases and the desktop is also noticeably more responsive.
