Installation of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) almost works out of the box for Compaq C702TU Laptop. It is an 'almost' because there are a few glitches here and there. However it is possible to get the system up and running with very little manual configuration and additional driver installation.

HP-Compaq has a laptop with model number - Presario V6608AU. Its an AMD Athlon machine with 1GB DDR II, 160 GB SATA Hard Disk, DVD RW etc. But they do not provide driver CD along with the laptop. However the end user can get online and chat with an HP representative through their online chat system to get ftp URLs (mostly) pointing to the right drivers. There are some things about running a company that you never think about until you run one. Some of these might look so insignificant and irrelevant in running a company that you would want to put them in the low priority list. Recently we came across a virus in one of our customers computers. The system was brought in with the complaint that it was running very slow and internet access was too slow to be of any use. We scanned the system with AVG and as was expected found a slew of viruses which AVG removed successfully after a complete scan. All but one - a file named startdrv.exe located at C:\Windows\Temp\startdrv.exe. AVG could not delete the file, neither could we delete it manually from Windows.
Next time when you insert your USB drive to a computer and if you happen to see a new "New Folder" not created by you, don't open it. It could be a virus infection. The worm creates a new file with the name New Folder.exe and hides the file extension so that you will not recognize that it was not a file folder and will accidentally double click it and the worm gets executed.
The Indian Linux User Group Trivandrum chapter(ilug-tvm) had been lying dormant for quite some time. However there has been a burst of activity within the group during the last two months. A few Linux enthusiasts including some of our own staff has decided that enough is enough and have successfully conducted ilug meetings for the last two months.
