This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Zyxware under the mentorship of Mr. Vimal Joseph. My objective was to develop a proof of concept chatbot that demonstrates how artificial intelligence can be used to improve a user’s on-site search experience. As my first experience in a professional environment, this internship gave me valuable insights on what it takes to work as an engineer in a real world setting. The challenge I was tasked with also helped me expand my knowledge on web design and the emerging field of machine learning. One aspect which made my experience so enriching was the freedom I was given to explore different solutions to the problem at hand. Initially my objective was to understand how Dialogflow works, and see if it’s suitable for our particular use case. My research revealed that identifying facets and keywords from a user’s natural language queries is very straightforward using Dialogflow’s built-in capabilities. This finding and the initial demonstration I prepared shaped the course of the rest of my internship. Being able to work at my own pace from home also made development much more comfortable and added to the open-ended nature of my experience. Artificial intelligence always seemed out of the scope of what I could learn on my own. Through Dialogflow, I was introduced to AI in a simple manner and gained a solid foundation in the principles of machine learning. I feel this exposure prepared me well to work on more advanced applications of AI and I am excited to continue exploring this field in the future. I was also required to develop a full stack for demonstrating how Dialogflow can be integrated in a production environment. After learning HTML and PHP for this purpose, I became very interested in web design and have begun developing my own website for showcasing the numerous projects I have worked on. In short, the technical experience I gained in AI and web design was one of the best aspects of my internship. My interactions with Mr. Joseph and the rest of the staff were the highlights of my time at Zyxware. Mr. Joseph was always supportive and helped me through any obstacles I encountered during development. In particular, I appreciated how he valued my thoughts on the direction we should take for the project. During my presentation, everyone was very receptive and seemed to appreciate my contribution to Zyxware. Although I was working by myself, these interactions truly made me feel like I was part of a team and making a meaningful contribution towards the project. The experience was very exciting and enjoyable, and I am sure to use the technical experience I gained in my future endeavours. Mr. Joseph was a wonderful mentor, and the rest of the people at Zyxware were very kind to me as well. Overall, I had a fantastic time interning at Zyxware.   Internships Leave a reply Your email address will not be published. Required fields are marker *

Second year Computer Science Engineering students of IIT- Palakkad did a short stint at the Kochi branch of Zyxware Technologies as part of their summer internship. Here are some excerpts from a talk with Adrian McDonald and Anish Mathew. We also got a chance to hear from their professors after they did a presentation about it at their college, which we have added at the end. Q. First let’s start with some casual questions on life at IIT Palakkad, how do you relax? We have extra curricular activities. We have tennis and football other than that we spend our time with friends. So that is our main form of relaxation. Q. Anish, you are from Kerala but Adrian, how do you find Kerala different from Kolkata? Kerala is a beautiful place especially Kochi. Culture is different but yes, it is really scenic. Q. Have you been to any other part of Kerala? Kochi and Palakkad so far. Q. Why did you choose to intern with Zyxware? How long was it? Anish: We were actually looking for internships and we wanted to target companies where the number of employees were small in the office, so we could get a more real life experience. And then our professor told us about Zyxware that they had come there to the college and might be working on our website. We heard about it and we read that you were working on Drupal: Drupal Open Source , so I got interested in that. That was the reason. Adrian: The main reason was that because it was Open Source. Our professor did tell us that since we were working in a small group, the focus that we would get will be more concentrated than anywhere else. That was why we choose Zyxware. We had another offer from a company in Bangalore but they said that your evaluation will be done weekly but here we get evaluations every single day. So I think this is more focused and it is much better this way. So we made the right choice. We are at the tail end of our 6 week internship. Q. What were your first thoughts and observations when starting the internship? Anish: This is my first interning experience. I thought the atmosphere would be more strict but then after coming here I found out it was much more pleasant and people are more supportive. The expectations are that I would learn something new and would be able to contribute to Drupal. So we have been going through the course. I find that I can contribute with some more effort. Adrian : It is the same. Q. What were some of your internship responsibilities? So the first responsibility that was given was more of an examination, more of a test. We were given a list of a few of the things that were needed to be done over Drupal, over the site builder. And then we started understanding how Drupal works from the inside. Q. Were you both familiar with Drupal before or Open Source? No, we weren’t. About a week before we came for the internship, we received a link to a site to catch up with the site builder. That is what we did. Q. What was the most interesting thing that happened while you were interning here? Anish: Honestly, it was the treats that we got on Friday. The atmosphere here is almost like a college. There during intervals and lunch break, people are like shouting. At lunch time here people are talking and interacting. That is fun. Q. What was the favorite part of your internship experience with Zyxware? Adrian: We had sessions with our mentor. He told us about his experiences and about how Open Source Software developed and what were the other applications of Open Source. That was also good. Q. As your time at Zyxware comes to a close, what has it been like or what did you learn from your overall experience at Zyxware? The experience was very good. We got more than what we expected. We had more mentor time. We had two mentors. Vimal and Mishal. They explained to us a lot which was much more than we expected. It meant a lot to us. And then whenever we sent a mail we got a reply whether it is good or not. That was also good. We are planning to maybe come back in December during our winter break, we have not finalized it yet. Adrian: Well, that is a request we are trying to make actually. Q. How would you describe our company culture? Everyone is co-operating with the interns. Helping each other. So when anyone has a doubt, we can always see them asking others. So it is not one person that answers but everyone comes and gives their input. Q. What about you, Adrian? The same thing because we had a doubt on a particular project and we were stuck for a while. Our mentors guided us through and helped us solve it. Q. How would you describe your experience working on Drupal? We actually were not trying to make a website. That was only the first week. Then we started learning how Drupal works. We were reading Drupal code and all that. So actually we are working on Drupal 8. Since it is object oriented it is actually challenging to find out how Drupal 8 works. But then over the weeks, we have come to a good understanding. Q. Adrian, would you like to add something? I think the community is very vibrant in Drupal. So while we were learning to contribute to the pipeline, we saw a lot of people were contributing. What is a contribution, to add a particular feature or not, the discussion went into all of this. We had to read through that. Then we had a chance to collaborate with people that were experienced in Drupal and all that. Q. Did you find Drupal a steep learning curve? Steep learning curve definitely. Cause we were not used to so much object oriented programming. Q. What are your future plans concerning contributions to Drupal? When you asked us what have been our responsibilities for internship, what we mentioned was what we did for the first week. After that we made a presentation. We made a slide for the presentation on Drupal . We will be making the presentation this weekend. And then we started searching the Search 404 module and giving patches for it. So we have started contributing to the contributed modules now. So after this internship, during the coming months we will be continuing to contribute to Drupal. We are interested in doing that. Q. What did you learn in your internship that you can now apply to the classroom setting or to your future? I think firstly it is writing proper codes. Our mentor stressed on following the style guide and writing the code according to that. That is one thing we are going to take away from here. Q. What about you, Anish? The same thing of course and working on Open Source has been a good experience. So we will be definitely writing that on our CV. Plus this internship. We came here because we were interested. Q. What skills did you acquire or what did you learn during your internship that you will be able to highlight in your resume, cover letters, and/or interviews? We got the opportunity to work on Open source. That is the main highlight. Plus what we said earlier. Before this, we had done lab courses so we could do coding ourselves. Working on a single project by ourselves. Here we saw, other people are working on team projects so we know how they collaborate. Vimal gave an extensive talk on how to manage a team project on a Git environment and all that. So that is something we will be taking away from here. When we work on group projects we will be making use of that. So I think more than what we are going to put on our resume, Zyxware helped us to use this information to make something else and then apply that on our resume. Q. What will be a word of advice you will give to those who seek internship? What are its benefits? One major thing that our professor actually told us, while trying to choose internship was to focus on places where you will get a personalized atmosphere. So when we chose Zyxware, one of the main reasons was that apart from the Open Source part we were informed that the set up was small. So whenever someone is trying to get an internship our advice to them is to try to go to a startup or a small place where you will get personalized attention rather than going into a big company just for the name of it. And the experience has been very nice at Zyxware. Q. Do you have any suggestions on how we could improve the internship programme of Zyxware? If it is possible to work with a team. We have been directly mentored, but if we could work on a project that they were working on. And also if we could work on something called pair programming. If we could be allowed to work on something like that. That would help. So we now know how the software works. But we would also like to know how the software is used. It was kind of like a crash course. We would like to know all about it. How to build a website using Drupal and all that. We can always learn it. But getting a personalized experience is much better. This is pure learning, having more interns would have been nice. Feedback from the Professors "One of the major objectives of the internship is to get hands on training for our students with real life experience and working in a professional software development environment. This gives them the familiarity to deal with live projects instead of the experimental ones done in our labs. With regards to the presentation that they did at the institute, this was one of the best in terms of quality. The regular feedback the students got from their mentor in Zyxware really helped in their internship learning. Based on the presentation and the input from the students we would love to send more students to Zyxware as part of our internship program.” Dr. Jasine Babu, IIT-Palakkad "The presentation of our students who came to Zyxware for internship was well structured and informative. Many internship presentations tend to loose the audience because the students focus only on what was learnt and do not put enough thought on how to convey that effectively in a 15 min presentation. We are also happy that the students could get to work on a complex problem and familiarize themselves with the issues of scalability and maintainability. This exposure that they got in Zyxware cannot be replicated in a college setting and really benefited the students." We have been offering short term internships to students in different areas of our operations. In the past we have been primarily offering internships in non-drupal related tasks. This year we had offered internships to a batch of students from RV College of Engineering for working with our development team and learn Drupal. We are happy to announce that the first batch of students have successfully completed their internship this month. We had conducted a Drupal workshop at RV College of Engineering last year and the idea about an internship was discussed at that point of time. Till date we were not sure if we would be able to take students through the riguour of training them in Drupal development and get them to become able Drupal developers during a short internship. We went ahead and decided to give it a try. We shortlisted a team of students from RV College and took them through our standard selection process. Selected candidates were taken through our introductory Drupal sessions and were then made to work on basic Drupal tasks. Once they were comfortable they were guided to work on an HR management project based on Drupal. We are hoping to run the internship program again next year and we are looking forward to interacting with more smart students who are interested in becoming Drupal developers and hopefully Drupal contributors. Recently, we had an opportunity to attend a consultative meeting hosted by Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam (RIT) on Academia Industry partnership. The meeting was in the context of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) of Government of India in which RIT is a part. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possible areas of cooperation between RIT and the different companies present. Other participants in the meeting included MRF, Rubber Research Institute of India, Infosys Technologies, UST Global, Tata Consultancy Services and Bioway Packs. The discussion was opened up with the Principal setting the context with a presentation on Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology and the expectations of the college from the partnership between Academia and Industry. This included the following: Establishing Industry-Institute Partnership to bridge the gap between campus and corporate Organizing workshops, conferences and symposiums with joint participation of the faculty and people from industries Arranging guest lectures, technical talks etc. Establishing MOU's between the Institute and industries for consultancy etc. Instituting scholarships to encourage healthy competition among students Providing internship opportunities to students The companies later presented their views on what are the possible areas of collaboration with the college. The three areas that were discussed primarily included internships for students at the different companies, partnership for 'soft skills' training for students and exchanging experience and knowledge on training and curriculum between academia and industry. Zyxware Technologies, represented by Thomas P. Thomas, Chief Executive Officer and Anoop John, Chief Technology Office, presented their views on industry academia partnership and suggested ways in which Zyxware Technologies could partner with RIT. The industry academia collaboration presented a good opportunity for mutual gains. The exchange of ideas could prove beneficial for research and teaching with the inputs from industry on technological advances that occur at a fast pace and practical training. Industry can benefit in areas like new product development, research based impact assessments and training for working professionals. These are only some of the more obvious gains. There are other substantive gains that can occur from an educational perspective which includes a broader perspective on the profession that students can achieve through exposure to industry. The broad framework for partnership should be developed keeping in mind the similarities and differences in objectives of industry and academia. This would enable to set appropriate mutual expectations for cooperative action and minimise conflicts arising out of mismatched expectations. A precondition for the partnerships to emerge is the existence of forum for engagement between companies and academia. We requested RIT to set up a portal where RIT could facilitate interaction between members of RIT and staff of interested companies, provide information on various research and consultancy activities that the college undertakes and programmes under which collaboration can happen. Zyxware Technologies outlined the areas in which Zyxware Technologies had engaged with the academia. This included development of RithuOS for students of technology, developer camps and training programmes in engineering colleges and polytechnics for students and faculty and support for Free Software Users Groups in colleges and internships for students. We offered to work with RIT around Free Software. This includes Free Software applications for engineering education, training for students in computer programming. It is hoped that this will be a mutually beneficial opportunity for RIT and Zyxware Technologies. We are offering summer internships for MBA students at Zyxware for the 2012 summer break. Internships are available specifically in the areas of Market Research, Training Need Analysis and Costing & Pricing. Interested applicants please send your C.V and a covering letter to careers at zyxware.com with subject line: MBA Internship - 2012. The last date to receive applications for this internship program is May 30, 2012. Project #1 Project Title: Feasibility Study on Zyxware Commission Agents Project Description: The project, in line with our mission of enabling people to leverage on Information Technology, proposes to set up IT Touch Points across the district of Trivandrum, Kerala. These IT Touch Points will be primarily channels for the following: 1. Consultancy on IT Hardware and Sales of IT Hardware 2. Delivery of IT Training Programmes (Basic Computer Skills, Web Site Development, Design Tools, Office Productivity Tools) The background to the project is as follows: As per Census 2011, desktop penetration in Kerala is only 9.5 percentage. Based on this data, it is safe to assume that IT penetration in Kerala is very much below optimal levels. The barriers to deepening of IT Penetration in our view are: 1. Cost 2. Insufficient information on IT Hardware Products and Prices 3. Lack of knowledge on operating computers 4. Insufficient IT skills and consequent inability to exploit economic opportunities The proposed project of IT Touch Points is an attempt to address 2, 3 and 4. The market research intern is expected to do the following: 1. Test the hypothesis on barriers to entry in a scientific manner and generate valuable insights 2. Contribute to Project Design 3. Identify potential partners for establishing IT Touch Points based on study The Market Research would involve a detailed study involving primary data collection. Desired candidate profile: The intern should have competency in the following: 1. Research Design and Implementation 2. Report writing abilities 3. Marketing Concepts Project #2 Project Title : Web Application Development Services Off-shoring Project Description:In order to leverage on our Web Application Development capabilities we are exploring the possibility of a Web Application Development Services Off-shoring model based on partnerships with other Web Application Development Companies based in USA or Europe. The essential model that we have in mind is one where we offer our competent Web Application Developers and Testers to existing Web Application Development Houses in USA or Europe to augment their existing resources. This offers the partner the opportunity to accelerate their growth plans and save on expenditure. At the same time, we gain from improving utilisation of our Web Application Development capabilities. We are looking for a marketing intern who can help us shape this strategy. This entails doing a demand assessment, identifying feasible models of engagement, and developing an understanding of pricing. Desired candidate profile: The intern should have a competency in the following: 1. Marketing Strategy Development 2. Research Abilities 3. Ability to communicate with potential partners Project #3 Project Title : Training Plan Development Project Description: We are looking to aggressively grow our Web Application Development operations over the next three years. This involves hiring and training a mix of freshers and programmers/testers with experience. So far, as our pace of growth was slow, our training primarily involved an initial session on Web Application Development and then close mentoring by a Senior Software Engineer. Subsequent skill development was primarily on the job. However, this model is no longer optimal. While the one on one interaction gives the opportunity to a developer to learn through a strong engagement, this was very unstructured leading to very uneven capability development. Also, the 'curriculum' was determined by the set of projects that each developer was involved. This meant that comprehensive and wide range capability development was difficult to achieve. Additionally, learning that occurred in an on the job scenario meant that there was inadequate commitment to processes, lack of comprehensive understanding of IT solution offering, lack of higher order conceptual clarity etc. The learning was more determined by the here and now. Given this, and our objective of raising the bar on quality, we are looking to develop a Training Plan which would take us closer to the objective of comprehensive professional development. We are looking for an intern to help us develop a training plan. Desired candidate profile: The intern should have the following attributes: 1. Understanding of Learning Theories 2. Grasp on basics of Curriculum Design 3. Understanding of Training Needs Analysis 4. Ability to do detailed qualitative and quantitative studies Project #4 Project Title : Costing and Pricing for Web Application Development Operations Project Description: We are looking for an intern who can undertake a detailed costing exercise for our Web Application Development Operations. As a software company, it is important for us to understand our cost structures and bench mark ourselves against comparable companies in the industry. This would also help us in our pricing decisions. Desired candidate profile: The intern should have the following attributes 1. Strong understanding of Costing Methodologies 2. Are you looking for an intellectually stimulating and challenging MCA project to wrap up your course? Are you looking for building something that people are going to use in real life instead of ending up in an old shelf in your college? If so you you have come to the right place. We are inviting smart and capable MCA students for some of our upcoming Free Software community projects. All these projects are going to be real world projects targeting real users and the completed work will be contributed to the community. Before you can rush in, you have to prove that you are capable enough to make it worthwhile for us to spend time with you. Send your resume to (mca-projects at zyxware dot com) us with a covering letter not less than 1000 words (A4 sheet single-line-spacing 12px font) explaining why you think that we should invest our time in you. The best way to showcase your technical abilities is to point us to some code that you have written previously. A URL, or a tarball attached to your mail would be sufficient. Also send us a 2 page(same specs as above) proposal on a Free Software project that you would like to participate/build. If we find the project more interesting and more worthwhile than the ones we have in mind we might take up your project and let you work on it. If you are planning to work on the project as a team then each member of the team has to send a separate resume + covering letter. The project proposal can be a joint proposal for your project. When you are applying as a team, attach all your resumes, covering letters and the project proposal with one single email to make it easier for us to sort through the mails. If we think that you might fit the bill you will get a call/mail from us within 2 weeks of you sending your application. We will not be able to answer/reply to rejected enquiries. If you don't get a call/mail from us within 2 weeks, you can safely assume that your application was rejected. You will have to be present physically at our office for the full course of the project. If you are from outside Trivandrum, we will help you in finding/arranging temporary accommodation. We will not be charging any fees for the project, neither will we be paying you any stipend for the project. During the project you will get an opportunity to be part of an exciting team of developers here at Zyxware. You will also get a chance to interact with IT professionals from the Free Software community here in Trivandrum. If you are smart enough you will also have a shot at getting a job here at Zyxware. Finally this will give you a chance to do something worthwhile for yourself and for the community through your MCA project.
