The openSUSE project is a worldwide community program and it is sponsored by Novell that promotes the use of Linux everywhere. The program provides free and easy access to openSUSE. It is equivent to the "SuSE Linux Professional". In the opesSUSE community, you will find those who all have the same goal in mind — to create and distribute the world's most usable Linux.

 

The goals of the openSUSE project are:

    * Make openSUSE the easiest Linux distribution for anyone to obtain and the most widely used open source platform.
    * Provide an environment for open source collaboration that makes openSUSE the world's best Linux distribution for new and experienced Linux users.
    * Dramatically simplify and open the development and packaging processes to make openSUSE the platform of choice for Linux hackers and application developers.

openSUSE is fully and freely available for immediate download, and is also sold in retail box to the general public. It comes in several architectures like x86, x86 64bit and so on and it comes in various editions.
openSUSE Download Edition: This is the freely downloadable ISO version, available from the openSUSE downloads page. It is available as a Live-CD version (KDE4 or GNOME) which can be installed on the hard disk, or as a more complete single layer DVD-5. This doesn't include any technical assistance or printed user manuals.
openSUSE Retail Edition: Users are able to purchase openSUSE box from Novell[9]. It contains a DVD-9 (dual-layer) comprising the 32-bit and 64, together with printed documentation, 60 days limited user support and 2 stickers. Media of the retail version is a little bit different from the downloaded ISO, but all software in the box which aren't on the downloadable ISOs are available on the FTP servers and freely accessible.
openSUSE FTP
: There is also a small ISO to install openSUSE directly from FTP (network install). The FTP can be used to complement the Download and Retail editions.
openSUSE Factory: This is the continuous ongoing development version, from which the development team take out regular snapshots (alpha, beta and RC) to get the stable openSUSE.

openSUSE comes with various desktop environments like KDE or the GNOME. YaST2 is the package manager used in the latest version of openSUSE (11.1). It contains Compiz Fusion, a 3D desktop that runs on AIGLX. It is enabled by default, if 3d opensource drivers are available for your graphics card. For creating/reading common document formats, OpenOffice.org productivity suite is available by default. It comes with applications like K3B for burning CD/DVD, Kaffine media player, Amarok audio player and lot many more.
