Compaq Presario C738TU Laptop Drivers for Windows XP

Presario C738TU is a Dual Core based laptop from HP-Compaq. It is a good machine with an Intel Dual core Processor with 1.6GHz, 512 MB DDR2 RAM, 120GB SATA Hard Drive, a SuperMulti DVD burner with Dual Layer, 15.4" Widescreen display, Wi-Fi, LAN, Integrated Webcam and Microphone and the Operating System used is DOS. You need to install an operating system to work on this machine. We have given the list of all drivers required for the same laptop for Windows XP. You can either click on the given links or copy and paste them to a new browser to download the drivers in to your system. It is always good to have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed in the system. This will help you to avoid many incompatibility errors.

Here are the basic drivers:

Chipset Driver:

Before installing the Audio and modem drivers in your Notebook you have to install the microsoft update(UAA) driver from the given link:

After installing the UAA driver restart the Notebook and then download and install the audio and modem drivers from the following links:

Download and install the driver, you will get the error while installing.
Perform the below steps to fix the issue.

1. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter.

2. Right click on "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus" and click Update driver.

3. Select "Install from a list or specific location".

4. Click Next. Then select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install".

5. Click Next and then select "Sound, video and game controller" from the list.

6. Click Next and then click Have Disk.

7. Click Browse C:\swsetup\sp34200 folder and select the .inf (wisxxxx) file and click open and Continue with the onscreen instructions.

Installation Instructions :

1. Download the spXXXXX.EXE file to a directory on your hard drive.
2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.

About a jack and sound problem

Firstly i want say very thankful to all supporter this forum and Mr Joju Joshua from team Zyxware that solve many problem that we create if we downgrade From Vista to Xp. c738tu wireless network problem

hello sir,
i am using vista premium on my c738tu notebook. all works perfactly except wireless network.
actually i have already downloaded sp37746.exe , sp39403.exe , sp38052 drivers from official website of hp.
i also installed them to notebook. but wireless network does not work.
what could be the problem according to you, sir?
i also reinstall all that driver again but no result for that also.

C738tu

The problem with C738tu is with Xp
1. headphone connected, speakers will work
2. mic won't work
Nothing can be done to rectify it as mentioned by hp in its site because this notebook is built for vista and not xp.

I suffered so much because i was not able to communicate using mic, so I thought of changing to Vista but it is very slow and it wouldn't accept most of old softwares(technical). Nothing can be done except installing dual operating systems, I did that and it is very easy and now if i want to talk to friends with mic, i open with Vista and all other time i use xp.

I was having xp in my system and I installed vista in another partition. Then when I installed vista drivers(which I downloaded from hp site), one problem happened. Xp audio has gone and vista started to work fine(mic and audio worked). Then booting with vista, I reinstalled audio driver from the CD given by Hp during the purchase of laptop. Then I booted with xp and found that the audio has started to work. so all problems solved. That is, If I need to use mic, I'll boot with vista or else I use Xp.

Note: after installing vista if you wish to work with some applications which are already in your system but installed with xp, some may not work. so you have to install another copy with vista.

Since Compaq 238TU comes with just 512 MB DDR2 RAM, can we install the 2GB DDR2 RAM available currently in the market and add it with the existing one? Or should the 512 MB RAM be removed?

I am faceing a problem installing xp for DV-1121TU (DV4) SERIES.
My problem is
I can run windows xp setup without any problem. After Installing winxp when i restart. It hangs on welcome screen.
I have check the BIOS ver is F.24. For installing xp we need flash the bios or what. plz tell me.
and the Factory Settings is vista os. This laptop come with preinstalled vista os. But I need windwos xp only
bcoz some of the applicatons are not supported in vista.

Audio coming form both external and headphone

I downgrade my Vista to XP.

My problem now is it produce sound from both external
and internal speakers(headphone) at the same time.

Ive tried all the 3 alternatives drivers- same result :(

Please help me to solve this.

The orange color of the wifi button cause me no problem
at all since i can connect using wifi.

But, i cant stand the audio problem.

hi..

i use to face the same problem....
but i found an simple solution to it.....
follows the symple steps:-
1. set the system volume to maximum.
2. mute the system volume.
3.now plug the headphone.

and dnt acccess the system volume i.e dnt increase or decrease it as long as you put on headphn.
i hope it work out for u....

Wireless problem

Could you please let us know the wireless device you are using. Unlike Windows, there wont be any issues with drivers for Ubuntu, in most of the cases. Goto system->Administration->Hardware Drivers, to know the available drivers for your device.

download the wireless driver from the net and then install it. After the installation

1. RIGHT CLICK ON "MY COMPUTER"
2. PROPERTIES
3. HARDWARE
4. DEVICE MANAGER

AND THEN CLICK ON UNKNOWN DEVICES AND RIGHT CLICK ON ethernet AND
THEN CLICK ON PROPERTIES AND THEN UPDATE DRIVERS AND and select the network adapter.and click on have disk and then search for the required file and install it

Hi FOUND SOUND DRIVER FOR COMPAQ PRESARIO C755TU

Hi all Found the sound driver of COMPAQ PRESARIO C755TU if any one wants then mail me and i will send him the file

My system is working Perfectly with head phone connected no sound comes from Speaker and mic too working fine

Only problem presently is that external mic from the sound port not working

Found alternative for that too you can either buy Head phone with MIC which has USB type connector and connect to USB and use it works perfect tried already or buy a CAM with MIC which is USB connection type .

Hi mine too was not working after finding out lot of softwares and talking to HP people nothing worked finally i baught a headphone with mic with USB connection and not normal connector this worked for me you can either buy a USB connecting headphone with MIC or only USB connecting MIC thats your choice be 100 percent sure this will work.

I cannot guarantee it that way. But you can try installing Vista. The company says that everything will work perfectly if you install Vista, as these are configured to work with Vista only.
You can also try installing Linux.

while installing them as u said there was an error.....but wen i proceeded as u suggested....u said there will be an option - "install from a list or specific location" but there is no such option. All i can find regarding installation is uninstall..
help me......i think i will have to switch to vista.

I am using compaq presario c 700 notebook its c738tu i have not got any preinstalled windows so if i use ubuntu 7.10 will all the drivers in ur site work with it or i will have to install other drivers .I am doing comp. engg. so i would also like to work in linux so pls tell me some tips also.

You will not need any extra drivers to install Ubuntu or any other flavor of GNU/Linux. The default installation will take care of the hardware drivers.

Installing driver

1st install the bus driver for that laptop
Just download the driver for this link

If it says anything for restart restart u r system
Then install the sound driver u can get it from

or try the alternate drivers given below

Download and install the driver, you will get the error while installing.
Perform the below steps to fix the issue.

2. Right click on "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus" and click Update driver.
3. Select "Install from a list or specific location".
4. Click Next. Then select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install".
5. Click Next and then select "Sound, video and game controller" from the list.
6. Click Next and then click Have Disk.
7. Click Browse C:\swsetup\sp34200 folder and select the .inf (wisxxxx) file and click open and Continue,yes with the onscreen instructions.

Media not found error

Dear Tushar,

Before installing XP, you will have to change SATA HDD (or similar) settings in your BIOS.
But we would suggest you do not put XP as there are various driver issues if you use XP on Compaq Laptops as these are not designed to work with XP.

Driver issues with Audio and Microphone in Compaq Presario C738T

Dear Mr. Shailendra,

As I mention everywhere in the site, these laptops are designed to work with Vista. There is no guarantee that the drivers for XP will work well as they are not properly tested. As a matter of fact, the company does not support use of XP now. Anyhow, please check the following post on How to resolve audio and mic problem in Compaq Presario Laptops. That is for the model Presario C733TU but try following the same steps, but use the drivers that you had downloaded for C738TU.
Regarding Ubuntu, it is recommended you install it to the last partition. Is drive D: you last partition or do you have more drives? Free the last partition and using the partition manager in Windows, you can delete that drive. Now boot the system from Linux media. At the step where you have to select the drive, you can select the one that shows free space. Create a swap partition (swap should be double the size of RAM in your machine) from the beginning of free space. Then you can select the rest of the space and create a new partition with format/File System as Ext3. Follow the onscreen instructions to install Ubuntu. Incase you find any difficulty, do feel free to contact us
