HP-Compaq have a Presario model of laptop - Presario V6604AU. It is an AMD based machine with Athlon X2 Processor TK-55 (1.8 GHz), 512 MB DDR2 RAM, 160 GB SATA Hard Disk, 8X SuperMulti Double Layer DVD Writer, 15.4" wide screen, NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7150M GS graphics and also has got Wi-Fi, Integrated Bluetooth. It comes pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Basic Edition.
The driver CD is not provided along with the laptop, which you will have to download from the internet. Here we have given the links to those drivers required for Presario V6604AU, for Windows XP.

This is a very good site and has helped me a lot.. I would like to know if there is any specific order in which i have to install the drivers. If so please let me know the order.
Also, a strange thing i notice in my device manager is that the 1394 Adapter shows an yellow exclamation mark next to it even though i have just formatted the system and installed fresh XP.
Could u please guide me wisely so that i can configure my system without any issues.

i know this site right from the strart when i purchased my laptop compaq 6604au. u provided me drivers for xp os as my latop comes with vista ur site was helpful for all my probelms thanks a lot. BUtttttttt now a serious issue i recently updated a bios driver from compaq wesite and up dated my bios from that time a couple of new problems started the notebook gets hanged, some times mal funtion of drviers i even tried to change the os versions but problem remains the same at last i came to a decision to pull back to my previous version bios for my laptop and dowloaded its factory version bios f.06 version but still there was a problem.. At last decided to recover my laptop using my set of recover dvds. And the hell thing is that when the laptop boots on that disks it is displaying a message that YOUR PC IS NOT SUPPORTED BY RECOVER DISKS YOU CANNOT RECOVER UR LAPTOP USING THESE RECOVER DISKS i dont know what to do either this is problem with the bios or any hardware problem now my current version bios f.08 version i flashed the bios for 15 time usiing differet versions can any helpful soul overthere help me to find a soulution to my problem and make my laptop working normal.

While informing you about the issue with the drivers that you have prov on the web , I would like to introduce myself Im currently working with HP previously was a Tech Support for Pavillion and presario units and currently for commercial units ... Im completely aware of installing and force installing the drivers
1> Sound drivers that you have mentioned worked fine after force reinstallation
2> Wlan drivers work fine after a normal installation
3> bluettooth drivers worked fine after normal installation
4> Nvidia drivers DONT WORK ... I've tried installing the drivers from the nvidia site directly.. these units have NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M .. I did download for xp from nvidia site I have no idea why it says the sw couldnt find the correct hardware .. as a last resort I did a force install in dev manager by selecting the preloaded xp drivers by have disk and choosing Nvidia GEForce 2 GO
5> Ethernet drivers ( Dev is Integrated Realtek (RT8201CL) 10/100 ) .. unfortunately I have tried 8 different drivers and it did not work , surprisingly XP doesnt recognise the make of the card and there is no way to force install a diff driver as well .I had been to realtek webiste and it has xp drivers however it asks to remove and replug the PCI/PCIE NIC card ( This is a nb ) but I still managed to do it and of no use

These drivers are property of HP-Compaq and are stored at their servers. Probably they would have removed the files from the location. Anyways, I believe all other features of your machine are working properly. This drives is for HP Quick Launch buttons, which will not affect the operation of your laptop in anyway. However, you may try other links given in pages of other laptop models that fall in the same family as yours, as almost all of these have similar hardware.

I have tried so much installation of these driver on my system(Compaq v6604AU), but those are not working properly by auto-installation. SO tried to give these installation manually, Now each n every driver is working properly and very good condition......
SO try to install all driver in manually after extraction all .exe file in ur system.
Like "video controller" problem...
I used GeForceware 8400 video, execute .exe installation file and foolow manually instruction....
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 G
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GS
select Device manager-->select video Controller
then follow the manually steps...
It should now be quite safe to use setup.exe to install the driver or probably a better way is to use the "have disk method' in device properties.

Install XP over Vista

I did not understand what is that you meant by "My internet connection is through a wire".
Regarding installing Vista, please make sure you have made Recover media out of the existing Vista. Since the Vista came pre-installed, it is a licensed version and registered to your name. So it is recommended to create the Recovery DVDs so that you can recover the system back to Vista later.
Instead of removing Vista, why dont you try installing XP over Vista. First you need to shrink the partition and create another one where you can install XP.
Reboot the machine and install XP using a bootable disk. Follow the onscreen instructions for the same. Please check the post on Dual boot - Vista and XP and follow the instructions given there.
Let us know what happens.

The only way to get drivers for your laptop is to download from the internet using the given links. We cannot send them to you one a CD because we are not authorized to do so. I have 6604au and installed XP SP2 on it. I have a problem installing chip set driver. I am using the same SP33411.exe after extracting the files on c:\swsetup\sp33411 folder the set of chipset installation start showing nvidia black background screen but it disappears after that without any error message or any prompts. That's all.It aso do te same while tring to install it by running setup.exe from swsetup\sp33411 folder.
As it is not installing Ethernet I am unable to use it. Please Help me.

Problem with Video and Ethernet Driver

Now coming back to the point, the drivers for video and ethernet controller are not working. I downloaded the chipset driver and installed it but in device manager i still see the list of hardwares with missing drivers. These includes:
3 Base System Device
1 Ethernet Controller
1 SM Bus Controller
1 Unknown Device
1 Video Controller
It would be really great if you can help us with it.

All the new laptops are designed to work on Windows Vista, with all the hardwares of newer versions. But when it comes to XP, all the drivers are not tested with the new hardware thus making is uncertain whether these will work with XP. So by manual installation, we are simply forcing the hardware to accept the driver with older versions. Generally this kind of installation does not give any troubles later. If it does, you will have to re-install them again

I believe the driver that you have installed in the laptop is a incompatible one. I believe you will have to try some alternate drivers. Before that please try installing them manually.
I cannot assure you regarding working of these drivers with Windows XP. The manufacturer itself is not giving any guarantee regarding these drivers.

I was going through ur site & I found ur topic interesting bcoz I m facing the same problem....,I have downloaded ur audio driver but its not working...I had installed Windows xp Black which seems as higher form windows xp service pack 3..It gives me better speed over Windows vista Basic...and while installing the driver an error pops up on screen "could not detect Media device"
so sir try to solve my problem....

1. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
2. Right click on "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus" and click Update driver.
3. Select "Install from a list or specific location"
4. Click Next. Then select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install"
5. Click Next and then select "Sound, video and game controller" from the list.
6. Click Next and then click Have Disk.
7. Click Browse C:\swsetup\spXXXXX folder and the double click the V32 folder. Select the .inf file, click open and Continue with the onscreen instructions.

If it was Vista, then the above drivers will not work, as they are for Windows XP. Also, did you format your hard disk partition completely? Generally, Compaq pre-installed laptops come with a recovery partition using which you can recover your system.

I got the same problem with my V6604AU laptop but now it working fine with XP.I dont know the exact location from where i download that, just do onething, search for NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7150M on internet somewhere you will find driver for graphics as well as ethernet that will come within one setup file.When you will run that setup it will extact file in c:\nvidia from where you can install.

ethernet drivers in chipset also arent working...
if you are really thinking other alternatives then downgrade to xp....

webmaster wrote on January 9, 2008 - 14:02We would suggest Ubuntu 7.10 (The Gutsy Gibbon) for your laptop, which is very user friendly. It is easy to install and support is available on internet. We had successfully configured Broadcom based devices on laptops please read our post on Installing Ububtu on laptops and also visit a beautiful set of instructions for installing ndiswrapper for the bcm43xx series chipsets. The documentation is for Ubuntu Feisty Fawn but it should work well with Gutsy too.
Regarding graphics drivers, you will have to enable restricted drivers option and it will configure the device by itself. All other drivers will generally work fine in Ubuntu.
Let us know if you face any difficulties

Only inconvenience you might face will be for card reader, and bluetooth which may have to configure yourself. LAN, Audio and others will work perfect. If you have internet access on my laptop, then you can definitely get aid from internet.

ubuntu for v6604au laptop
upender (not verified) wrote on January 8, 2008 - 09:01yesterday i tried to install ubuntu 6.06 on my laptop. but failed saying unable find drivers. so i dont think ubuntu 6.06 will work on this computer.
But i installed xp on my system yesterday. all the drivers are working. Only thing one has to do is, while installing particular driver, if things go normal leave them, if they fail then go to control panel and to add hard ware, there click on " yes, i have already connected hardware" then click on the hardware type like sound and audio devices and then click on manual search then click on brose option there u go to c:/swsetup/goto ur driver file like for this sound sp34204, there u will find one inf file, follw on screen, u will all drivers.
for me sound, graphics, bluetooth are working. i didnot check the other things. hope it will help

What you had tried is an earlier version of Ubuntu, the Dapper Dake. Please try Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). That should work well on your system.
And regarding the Windows driver, yes, your step is right. You will have to follow the manual installation way.

Windows Vista is a heavy operating system which require atleast 1GB of RAM to run pretty well. Windows XP is definitely lighter than Vista. Since Presario V6604AU has only 512MB RAM, you might have noticed that Vista will make the machine slow and I guess that is the reason why you had thought of downgrading to XP. On the other hand, Windows XP will definitely run smooth on the same amount of RAM. The only problem which you might feel is that you will not be able to get the same look and feel of Vista in XP. Otherwise, everything should work fine.
I hope that you are using a licensed and original version of Windows XP and we would definitely request you to do so or you can even think of switching to Ubuntu where do not have to worry about any license or piracy issue.

There is nothing like the motherboard supports driver only for Windows Vista and not Windows XP. All the hardware devices will generally work with all kinds of Operating Systems. The only difference is that you will get a set of drivers for Vista, but another set for Windows XP and so on.
What is the error that you get when you tried to install these drivers? Make sure that before you installed sound drivers, you need to install the UAA drivers for HD audio which is available along with other drivers.

In case of Audio u have to first install Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver then search drivers online by Found new hardware.given audio driver is not working.
Any way thanks for these two drivers.
now i can listen songs and watch movies in Windows XP.
and connect internet with bluetooth dial up.

These installations are for Windows XP and these are generally not available in company's website. You need not have to use these in case you are planning to continue using Windows Vista.
