Rithu is a Linux Distro based on Ubuntu. The first version of Rithu, has been named as “Shishiram”, a Malayalam word that means “autumn”. Rithu is targeted mainly towards students of technical undergraduate courses and has been developed to help them with its repository of Free Software Applications that support CAD. Rithu mainly focuses on packaging CAD applications. Students of technical undergraduate courses who require CAD for their studies need to depend on proprietary tools to further their training. However, such tools are not designed to foster the spirit of learning in students and are out of reach of students who require them the most. Rithu was designed to bring about a change in this scenario. Designed by students, Rithu is the first Ubuntu distro with a wide assortment of CAD software found in the free software domain and targeted at technical students of noncomputer science streams. Rithu intends to make free software CAD tools more popular among the student community. Rithu is absolutely free of cost and can be shared and distributed freely among friends and colleagues, thus minimizing the dependence on pirated software . Besides, it also promotes the community spirit in students which in turn will lead to the development of free software.
