| | 1 min read

Many Drupal users have encountered a "Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; upgrading MySQL client." during the setup of a new install of Drupal. If you are facing this error while installing Drupal then continue reading to find the solution.

The error occurs because you are using MySQL 4.1 or a higher version and you need to reset the password to match the style of the MySQL versions prior to version 4.1. If you are using PhpMyAdmin and have the privileges to edit MySQL user info then you can fix this quickly. Follow the steps below.

  • Go to the main PhpMyAdmin page
  • From there select the privileges option
  • Next edit the user which you use to connect the Drupal database.
  • You should see an option to 'Change password'
  • Retype the password for that user
  • Now comes the important step.
  • Under 'Password Hashing' select the option 'MySQL 4.0 compatible'
  • Save your selection.
  • Now you should be able to connect to your Drupal database without any errors.

Hope that helps.
