Freelance projects fall into a separate category of projects in that they target independent developers and are inherently smaller in size. The company/person giving the project, might not require to engage a larger company for the project because of the size of the project or, might be doing it just to cut costs. In either case the likelyhood that the project is based on a popular open source solution is very high. This likelihood is confirmed from the high percentage of OSS applications related freelancing projects available in all the freelancing sites. To better equip oneself to work in the freelancing market it is good to get familiarized with the most popular of the OSS applications that are likely to yield freelancing projects. We have compiled a list of such software.

We hope that this would also give them a wonderful opportunity to learn and try new technologies, interact with other students with similar likes and the best part - get paid for doing this. Additionally we hope to nurture and build a forum of students through this project to promote FOSS, entrepreneurship, other open ideas, and similar initiatives. Even though Kerala can proudly claim that it has almost 100% literacy rates, the e-literacy rates are dismally low. The younger generation is being initiated into the world of computers through their schools very early in their lives. However the not-so-young generation has missed the bus and of these only those with strong initiative have successfully gotten into the bandwagon. Kerala Government is extensively trying to spread e-literacy but there is still a big chunk of the population who have not participated in the Akshaya campaign. Some reasons are i) no time after regular employment, ii) uneasiness in going to a literacy class iii) sensitivity in proclaiming the e-illiterate status. To tackle some of this problems we have launched a test program where we send our staff to train the e-literate in the comfort of their homes. We are just taking on the enquiries one at a time currently to see the general response. If this program is a success we hope that it would generate employment opportunities for the e-educated unemployed youth in the state. Additionally this program would increase prospects for students to get some part-time employment and earn some extra income. There is a whole bunch of them here and they call themselves as Indie Developers. Nice name eh? And there has been some successful players in the market as well. Nick Bradbudy is one of them. He is maintaining a blog at nick.typepad.com where he recently blogged some generous tips for wannabe indie developers. I think, his blog is an inspirational tool, which probably you might want to add it to your initial list in this blog. Yet another one is Jan Goyvaerts the creator of EditPad Pro. He maintains a blog at http://www.shareware-beach.com/. I myself is a loyal customer of both Nick’s and Jan’s products and I can attest myself that they do what they preach. Yet another concept, which is somewhat relevant to Freelancing is MicroISV a word first coined by Eric Sink (Founder of SourceGear) and later being used and misused by wannabe entrepreneurs. ~ranjith Add new comment
