In a high profile function at the State Capital on 16th January 2008, the INSIGHT Project - ICT centre for differently abled in the state of Kerala was inaugurated. The project is promoted by the Kerala State IT mission (KSITM). SPACE (Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment) who masterminded the switch to the School GNU/Linux for the IT @ School project is the key player behind this project as well.

The objective of the project is to enable physically differently abled people to access computers and use their full potentials to empower themselves. Currently this program uses Ubuntu as the Operating System of choice for delivering the capabilities through special applications. In the initial phase, the project focuses on visually challenged people and in the later phases will shift focus to other physical challenges.

The modus operandi of the project is to train master trainers, mostly with the kind of physical abilities of the people they are trained to train, and then empower them as trainers and entrepreneurs who can provide their services through the Akshaya centers across Kerala. The model has already been tested and tried out and has been found successful. Perhaps other states in India can take a cue from this and implement similar projects like INSIGHT. More information about the project can be found at the SPACE-Kerala website.

We at zyxware are happy at this wonderful and most noble project and wish the project all the best. We also would like to extend our whole-hearted support for the project in terms of providing low cost hardware, providing support for the end users or even sharing our IT resources with the project staff and the target audience. We also will be able to ship out any FLOSS software CDs/DVDs required for the project through our RequestCD program.
