Presario C733TU is an entry level laptop from HP-Compaq. It is an Intel Celeron based machine. It comes with Intel Celeron-M(1.73 GHz) processor, 512MB DDR2 RAM, 80GB SATA Hard Disk, DVD Super-Multi burner, 15.4" Widescreen Display,Wi-Fi, Modem, 1.3 MP webcam and many more. This model of Presario has an audio controller that supports the high definition audio. You need to have Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio installed on the computer before installing the audio driver.

When you type lspci in your terminal window, you will find a list of pci devices connected in your system. In that you would probably find two entries in the name Ethernet controller and it should give details of both the LAN and wireless. I believe your laptop contains BroadCom wireless. I do not know which version of Ubuntu you had installed. But if you install the latest version, which is Ubuntu 8.10 and update it, you will be able to use and configure wireless in your machine. Earlier versions does not automatically install wireless drivers, for which you needed to manually install them. But the latest one is better.
After installing, please make sure that you complete all updates from online and please use the LAN for updating before setting up the wireless.

Drivers for Windows XP SP2 are hard to get from the hp.com site
I have in included search terms in quotes so if links provided are dead you can still search for them using google
Here is the list of drivers which worked for me after installation of XP SP2 (XP with SP2 integrated version) make sure you disable sata support in BIOS settings
Follow the following steps in order
1) Intel Chipset SM Bus Controller: get it from Intel Site Search ”infinst_autol.exe” or “INF Update Utility” for Chipset 9xx (I think it is 945 or 965) on google .Search for Intel Chipset Identification Utility to know you chipset version. Don’t download or install the Zip version of the INF Update Utility
2) Video Drivers for 965 Express Graphics “win2k_xp14311.exe” “intel graphics driver win2k_xp14311.exe” you can download the latest version of Intel Graphics Depending upon your Chipset version.
3) Unknown device in device manager is actually (check properties of Unknown device has something like ACPI\HPQ0006 as one of the details download drivers which I am sharing) HP Quick launch Button Software no need to download the whole stupid software. The driver is just 11 KB while actual download of the full thing is 20 something MB

This model is a good one, and the price is great. Only issue that everyone faces is incompatibility of drivers for Windows XP. All latest model laptops are designed to work with Windows Vista only. There is no guarantee that drivers for XP will work perfectly with the laptop.

Although the method listed is for feisty, it should work for gutsy as well. Just make sure that the wireless chip is Atheros AR5007EG by typing lspci in the terminal and checking its output. Do post back if you have any further questions

I recently bought a compaq V3719TU and the built-in mic was not working. When the headphones were plugged in, the sound came from both the speakers AND headphone, which was rather silly to have a headphone in the first place.
I called HP, and was told that there was something wrong with my motherboard and Intel. Called Intel and they told me to refer back to HP. And it went on and on for weeks! The Customer care of HP was totally useless as well.
Anyway, I recently had it resolved. I know how frustrating it can be so I would like to tell all of you facing the same problem as I did, to go to Mid Valley (if you are in Malaysia) and go on to the third floor, the dudes from HP outlet are amazing. They fixed the problem in seconds. Arent the friendliest people on earth but they managed to resolve my problem with no charges.
So, if you are having problems, head on to HP Mid Valley, Malaysia. Save yourself the heartaches!

I noticed you said use the driver that was given to you? So I'm a lil confused to which step of your procedure should I begin with. What do you mean by "use the driver that was given to you"? Since I have just downloaded sp34200 and have installed it in previous attempt to fix my audio problems, what should I do now? Should I go straight to reinstalling the multimedia? I would'nt want to risk on losing my audio again if I made a mistake.

Speakers and Wifi are definitely installed in your laptop. The problem is that the driver you tried were either not properly installed, or were not compatible with your hardware.
You need to try installing them manually and if that does not work, try some alternate drivers of laptops that come under the same series.

Installing this driver may result in an error. But continue with the following steps to get the audio driver installed correctly.
1. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter.

The driver given for wireless in this page should be working. Try re-installing it again. Before that, ensure that you have Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, installed in your laptop.

I'm about to purchase a Presario C733TU since i need a computer badly that i can bring around. Since i'm not a "techy" person i though of trying this 1 out since it was affordable. but after reading the problems your visitors here said, and all... do you think it would still be a good buy? My friend told me not to use vista but xp but will this be a problem if i install xp instead of vista? please i need your advise if its a good buy or i should just try something else.Thanks.

Vista is a heavy operating system than XP. It might make the system work slow even though you have 512 MB of RAM. For Vista to run pretty smooth, you require1GB RAM. XP is another option and we would recommend that you obtain legal and licensed version of Windows. We have given links to drivers for XP over here. Even HP-Compaq does not give a guarantee regarding these drivers as they are not tested for Windows XP. If you are thinking of Vista, the drivers can be obtained from Compaq's site, in Support and Downloads page.
Another better option is to install GNU/Linux in it. The latest versions of Linux are really easy to manage and configure. I would suggest installing a flavor of Linux called Ubuntu 7.10 (the Gutsy Gibbon) which is the latest one in Ubuntu series. You can download it for free from http://www.ubuntu.com . Through their site, you can even have a free copy shipped at your doorstep, but that might take more than a month. If you have a fast internet connections, downloading is a quick option. If any of your friends have the same, that would be a quickest option. We provide complete support for GNU/Linux, especially Ubuntu. You can also get help from online Ubuntu communities.
There are other flavors of GNU/Linux which are available free of cost. You can even try Mandriva Linux. It is a good one for a person who is used to Windows. It has a look and feel more like Windows.

I had tried all the drivers you give above, but the sound card doesn't work ( I also tried some another drivers ). I have a driver that work with windos xp but it's only problem that when I plug in headphone the inside speaker still work (^_^)

Now these laptops are designed to work with Windows Vista. You might face such problems when you try to downgrade to Windows XP. HP-Compaq has informed that these drivers are not tested for Windows XP as they also are not promoting use of XP.
